Simon from Cyrene and the moment he had being mentioned in the scriptures, though brief, speaks volumes into my soul.
Matthew 27:32-35- 32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.
33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
Some things we fail too see in reading this portion of scripture is first, Simon joined the Lord in carrying His Cross. When we are born again, we trade our heavy burdens and yokes for Jesus light and easy burden (Matthew 11:28-30) we in truth continue the ministry of Simon from Cyrene because we too bear the Cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus declared to His Disciples that He had to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and raised again the third day (Matthew 16:21).
Then old Peter came and took Him aside and was going to straighten Him out. Lord this wont happen to you be it far from you Lord but what did Jesus say in response to what Peter said? Get thee behind me satan: thou art an offense unto me: for thou savourest (do not understand) the things that be of God, but those that be of Men(Matthew 16:23). How could Jesus say that to Peter? This guy a few verses earlier was the only one walking around in Revelation Knowledge and now Jesus is calling him satan!!!
It was God’s purpose to make Jesus a propitiation for sin, the sin of the whole world (1 John 2:2). What is a propitiation? A means of appeasing. It pleased God, who allowed Jesus, the perfect sinless one who knew no sin,to become sin that we might be made the righteousness of God by Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). Peter was not purposely attempting to stop Jesus from saving the world, but was acting like so many of us do in response to the will of God, we resist it.
Simon did not resist, no where does it say that. It sounds good in songs and during Easter plays it adds too the drama but He did not resist. The Cross of Jesus He did bear and each of us must bear His Cross also. There is an old song published back in the 1800’s that says and I quote, “Must Jesus bear the cross alone, And all the world go free? No, there’s a cross for everyone,And there’s a cross for me.” The reality of us sharing with Him in His Sufferings has been lost too the church. We are all too busy walking around quoting a promise give to Israel found in (Psalms 105:15) Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm, as if the ministry today was more special in some way or privy too having the heads chopped off, or being crucified upside down because of their great anointing. Most of these men have never picked up their cross to follow Jesus.
I am not trying to be critical but honest. Jesus declared too us in (Matthew 16: 24-27) 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
The greatest of all men of God in my estimation, who wrote 2/3 of the New Testament, declared in (Romans 8:18) For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. The Apostle Peter preached this also. (1 Peter 2: 17-25) 17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
Hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps. When the Sons of Zebadee’s mother came with her two boys and said Jesus can you do me a favor? Let your left side and right side next to your throne be reserved for my two boys? What was Jesus response to her inquiry?
Matthew 20:22- But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. What cup was Jesus speaking about here? I believe it was the same cup He prayed if it be your will Father, remove this cup from me (Matthew 26:39). It was not the passover cup the cup of the New Testament we drink to represent His blood shed on Calvary( Luke 22:20) but the cup of wrath John wrote about in (Revelation 14:19; Revelation 19:15) Jesus pouring out the cup of the fierceness and anger of Almighty God in judgment on the world He was so painfully dying to save.
We are like the sons of thunder, because we are so mighty and so powerful, we got Jesus name, we are so Holy, we belong to the church, we pay our tithes, we are it!!! They said to Jesus when He ask them can you handle my baptism and what about the cup? They said We Are Able! Here is what I have come too realize in my life as I draw closer to Jesus and as my time on earth draws me closer to eternity then I was, Jesus words burn like fire in my soul.
Matthew 20:23-And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
The disciples of Jesus did drink the bitter cup we all must drink and they were baptized with the Baptism of Jesus. That is why in spite of their sufferings, and imprisonments, and death they reached out to a lost world they knew that would one day have to give an account of it’s sins and that when Jesus comes there will be no advocate for them. We don’t bother carrying the cross of Jesus because we would rather be religious and detached from reality. Jesus soul purpose in building His Church was to be a vehicle through which His Presence could move upon lost humanity and bring them to the New Birth Experience.
I will close this bible study with the words of the Apostle Paul:
(2 Timothy 2: 11-13) 11 It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
If you want the true anointing of the Holy Ghost, share the cross with Jesus. he is waiting for you too carry it. He said He would help you.
In Jesus Name,
